In Praise of Ned Ludd

Here is a list of ways that technology made my life better this weekend:

  • I bought the new My Morning Jacket CD. It’s distributed by BMG, which means it has DRM that only allows you to rip to WMAs which don’t work on my iPod. So I had to spend an hour figuring out how to circumvent the copy protection and delete the copy protection software from my computer. I don’t really want to listen to the CD anymore.
  • I figured out that part of the reason my internet connection has been so shitty lately is my router. So I had to break down, make the trip to Worst Buy, and get a new router. At least I don’t have to go to the suburbs to go to Worst Buy anymore.
  • Apparently, the ethernet port on my desktop is fried, so I had to use my laptop to configure the new router. But the new router has this spiffy security feature that will only let you use one computer to configure the router. So now I have to get out my laptop every time I need to change the settings.
  • I also think that my Vonage box is screwing up my internet connection. This, I believe, is Comcast’s fault, since I’ve heard rumors that they’re going to start giving top priority to data traffic using their VoIP service and lowest priority to data traffic from Vonage and others.
  • Cell phone means that I can deal with work emergencies at 8:00 pm on Friday night when I’m out with friends.

  2. MMJ - Fun… When they’re rocking out. BORING AS SHIT when they’re quiet and introspective and “deep”. That’s what i gathered from a firsthand experience at a cool venue in Chi-town (the vic). They should mark which songs rock and which songs suck on a tracklist with ROCK-O-METERs (1 harp for unrock, 5 burning sixstrings for chest-hair igniting rock) so I can get to the meat of the action. Music equivalents of Porno-plot dialog are not my cups of tea. Fast forward anyone?

all in all the tracklist was good enough that I didn’t hate them, and I will listen to them again. But the buzzing conversation during the quiet parts led me to believe that I wasn’t the only party out of the sold out show that was like…”where’d the rock go?”.
