I have been able to think of almost nothing the last week except skiing. Every day, I’ve been browsing the online ski shops, checking out the pictures of fresh powder at Moonlight Basin and Bridger Bowl, and watching the forecast to the when skiing weather was finally going to return to the southeast.
I made plans to head up to North Carolina first thing Saturday morning. Take in the afternoon and evening session at Sugar Mountain. Stay overnight at a cheap motel, and hit the road again early in the morning to check out Beech Mountain for the day session. Unfortunately, when I checked the weather at 7:00 am Saturday, they had pushed back the arrival time of the big cold front until mid afternoon and were calling for rain up until then.
So I stayed home, which turned out to be the good call because conditions were supposed to have been really bad all day Saturday. Five inches of new powder on Sunday, though, and nothing but cold weather and more snow for another ten days, so I think we’ll try again this weekend.
The funny thing is, though, considering that I could stay with my ‘rents for free, it wouldn’t cost that much more to fly out to Montana and ski around Bozeman than it would to drive up to North Carolina. Still, it’s not an adventure when you’ve done it half a dozen times before. So, here’s to another week of anticipation. Though definitely another trip out west before the season is over.
