The Least Important Ubuntu Switch Story Yet

Back at the end of June, I had a project at work that involved documenting the installation and configuration of a Linux appliance. It was right about the same time of Mark Pilgrim’s switch from Mac to Ubuntu. I figured I needed something to up my geek cred and that it certainly couldn’t hurt with work to learn a little more Linux, so I started messing around with Ubuntu on my laptop.

Well, two months and a few battles later, and I’m using Ubuntu as my main OS on both my computers now. I haven’t logged into Windows at home in weeks. In a way, it makes sense. Firefox and GAIM were already my two most used programs, and after the debacle with the My Morning Jacket CD, I swore off DRMed music and the iTunes Music Store.

Once I learned to use iwconfig and iwlist to hook up with my wireless router, the joys of apt-get, infinite customizability, freeness, and non-evilness is just too much to pass up. After working on my crashy Windows all day, it’s nice to come home to be greeted by the now familiar drums and Circle of Friends.
